This remarkable Luteus Pleco (Hypostomus luteus), also known in the aquarium trade as the Golden Sailfin Pleco, is a rare South American armored catfish prized for its dramatic color transformation.
This specimen measures more than 12 inches and displays what the aquarium trade commonly calls Phase 2.5 coloration—a transitional appearance between the darker Phase 2 pattern and the increasingly golden Phase 3 form.

Color Development
Luteus Plecos are known for changing dramatically as they mature. Younger fish generally have dark bodies with yellow spotting. As they develop, yellow coloration expands across the body and fins. Mature Phase 3 specimens may become predominantly golden.

Diet
Offer a varied, algae-focused diet consisting of:

Temperament and Compatibility
Luteus Plecos are generally peaceful toward appropriately sized community fish but may become territorial with other large plecos or bottom-dwelling fish.
