The Roosevelt dime debuted in 1946, shortly after President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s death in April 1945. Roosevelt was closely associated with the March of Dimes and the effort to combat polio, making the dime an appropriate memorial to his life and public service.
Designed by John R. Sinnock, the obverse features Roosevelt’s portrait with the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the 1946 date. The reverse displays a central torch symbolizing liberty, an olive branch representing peace, and an oak branch representing strength and independence.
No mint mark is visible on this example, identifying it as a Philadelphia Mint issue. The coin displays silver-gray coloration with light golden toning and strong remaining design details.
